It was a trip to that very city that inspired this work. Fields of blue agave outside of town - such a bizarre color. I first painted a large landscape to showcase the expanse of alien-blue fields, but I was not happy with it for if you look closely the dominating blue and green tones give way to purple shadows and pure white highlights; this is what I attempted to emphasize here.
